Cultural Background: Nisga’a and Métis, BC
Chantelle Trainor-Matties is an artist from British Columbia, with Nisg̱a’a, Métis, and mixed European ancestry. Working for herself full-time as an illustrator, painter, designer, and muralist, she creates personal work and takes on projects for private and commercial clientele through her small art business Frettchan Studios. Her Indigenous work is contemporary Northwest Coast formline in relation to her Nisg̱a’a roots and she often fuses that style with painterly realism or cartoon illustrations using a variety of mediums. Her portfolio consists of many subject matters, flora and fauna, pop culture, and the macabre; however, she primarily highlights animals in her work and loves to find lessons we can learn from them and practice in our everyday lives.
